The lack of humour really makes a difference. Back in D1 everything was gothic, dark, slow, and scary. Diablo 2 being mostly above ground lacked that creepy feeling to it, like the way you felt when you exited the dungeons level 4 and entered the catacombs, to see it go from gothic prison like to crumbling corridors. This ad has that great scary aspect to it but without giving anything away. This add has a very Diablo 1 feel to it. The lack of humour really makes a difference.
